Finding Hope in Dark Times: Hendrika de Vries’ Journey of Courage and Healing

In Nazi-occupied Amsterdam during World War II, young Hendrika de Vries witnessed extraordinary courage. Her family hid a Jewish child in their home, and she watched her mother join the Dutch Resistance and withstand interrogation at gunpoint after the child was discovered and taken away. These experiences would shape a lifetime devoted to resilience, hope, and helping others find their strength.

Hendrika’s remarkable journey spans continents and generations. From her childhood in wartime Holland to her teenage years as an immigrant and champion swimmer in 1950s Australia, and later as a young wife and mother in the turbulent United States of the 1960s, her life story is one of perseverance, adaptation, and purpose.

Hendrika de Vries

As a young swimming instructor in Australia, Hendrika experienced a defining moment when she helped a boy whose legs had been paralyzed by polio learn to trust his upper body and move through the water. Watching him discover his own strength revealed a calling that would eventually lead her to become a family therapist in the United States.

Today, Hendrika de Vries is a retired family therapist, teacher, and writer with a background in theology and depth psychology. She is the author of two memoirs, including one about a little Dutch girl who journeys from the shadows of war to a new life in Australia, confronting loss, shattered dreams, and inner struggles before discovering her unique path forward.

Through her writing and speaking, Hendrika inspires audiences with a powerful message: even in the darkest times, hope and possibility remain. She believes that by sharing our stories, we become witnesses to resilience and agents of change. Her life and work remind us that courage, compassion, and the human spirit can endure—and flourish—against all odds.

She hears the timeless Land speak and sees the Southern Cross as a beacon when she walks in the bush with her father. When a Toy Dog Became a Wolf and the Moon Broke Curfew

Born in the Netherlands at a time when girls are to be housewives and mothers and nothing else, Hendrika de Vries is a “daddy’s girl” until her father is deported from Nazi-occupied Amsterdam to a POW camp in Germany and her mother joins the Resistance. In the aftermath of her father’s departure, Hendrika watches as freedoms formerly taken for granted are eroded with escalating brutality by men with swastika armbands who aim to exterminate those they deem “inferior” and those who do not obey.

As time goes on, Hendrika absorbs her mother’s strength and faith, and learns about moral choice and forced silence. She sees her hidden Jewish “stepsister” betrayed, and her mother interrogated at gunpoint. She and her mother suffer near starvation, and they narrowly escape death on the day of liberation. But they survive it all—and through these harrowing experiences, Hendrika discovers the woman she wants to become.

No Obstacle Too Great Not to Overcome and Be Successful

Dr. Fidele Sebahizi's powerful story of courage and perseverance will inspire you to create your own life from the ashes, no matter what giants are in front of you.

Dr. Sebahizi was born and raised in a poor village in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His life was rough. He experienced lots of terrible things, including escaping a genocidal killing at least twice. When he arrived in the United States in 2007, he felt tremendously blessed to have been given such a wonderful opportunity to achieve his unfulfilled dreams, especially going back to school.

He overcame life obstacles as an immigrant in the United States to achieve the American dream. He became the first immigrant to join and work for the Abilene Police Department in Texas as a police officer. While working for the APD, Fidele earned multiple degrees: a B.A. in Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University in New Hampshire, an M.S. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University in Texas, and a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice—Homeland Security from Liberty University in Virginia.

In his interview, he shares incredible stories of courage. In 2004, when he was trapped in a house between two heavily armed forces fighting each other, he didn't know if he would be alive today. In addition, he witnessed a genocidal massacre against his people in a United Nations refugee camp in Burundi, Africa, witnessing the burning bodies of his relatives and friends.

His faith in Jesus Christ is the common denominator that helped him to overcome life's obstacles and struggles. He knew God was always with him and was determined never to give up.

Embark on an extraordinary journey from a remote African village, through the horrors of a refugee camp massacre, to a remarkable life as a police officer and PhD holder in the United States. "Creating a Life from the Ashes: A Memoir" is a testament to the indomitable spirit of an African refugee who chose to face and overcome insurmountable challenges.

In this book, you will discover:

  • How to build a life from nothing, regardless of your beginnings or struggles.
  • The importance of confronting challenges head-on.
  • Why avoiding challenges can lead to greater difficulties.
  • The true happiness that comes from overcoming adversity.
  • The power of rejecting excuses and embracing responsibility.

"Creating a Life from the Ashes" inspires readers to rise above their circumstances with determination and resilience. This memoir demonstrates that no matter how humble your beginnings, you can achieve greatness and make a significant impact.

Don't miss out on this powerful story of courage and perseverance. Be inspired to create your own life from the ashes.

Dustin Rivenbark has dealt with addiction firsthand, seen the devastating effects of infidelity in a marriage, lost what he thought was his livelihood, lost a daughter to Potter syndrome, lost a mother to drug addiction, and dealt with ongoing health issues. All of this took the wind out of his sails, and he found himself broken, lost, and afraid. Rivenbark wanted to fight through the scars and the pain of life, but he needed a system that would give him a road map to freedom.

Did You Ever Have the Sudden Realization that We Only Get One Shot at This Life?

Dustin Rivenbark spent 10 ½ years climbing the ladder in the oilfield industry, having the bottom fall out of the market and starting over, only to have the hardest year of his life with the loss of his daughter, his mom (to a drug overdose) and his grandmother all in the same year.

In Courage and Redemption, he shares how the six key battle principles from the story of Joshua helped lay the groundwork for him to turn tragedy into triumph.

Courage and Redemption narrates that not only has Rivenbark dedicated his life to being the hands and feet of Christ but he’s also committed to motivating people to never settle with the status quo.
